String Orchestra

String Orchestra

Burnaby North is fortunate to be one of the few schools in the Lower Mainland to have an orchestra. The class itself is comprised of students from all grades playing string instruments: violins, violas, cellos, and basses. On occasion, to enhance the orchestra, woodwinds, brass, and percussion from our concert bands are brought in to permit the group to perform full symphonic orchestral works.

Repertoire performed covers everything from Baroque to Classical to Romantic to contemporary, and even a taste of jazz!

The orchestra has been the recipient of many awards at festivals, including the Vancouver Kiwanis Festival and MusicFest Canada. In fact, one of our past students, April Choi, won the 2011 National Arts Centre Outstanding Orchestral Performer Award at MusicFest, that came with a $1000 cash scholarship!!

A goal of the orchestra is to tour and showcase the wonderful talent of the orchestra. They can be heard locally at Burnaby North’s December and May concerts, plus the annual theatre concert at the Michael J. Fox Theatre in mid-March.
